Re the Sept. 16 story, “Massage parlor mural rubs Hollywood the wrong way”:
Today’s current economic status could easily be described as bleak or bland. Even grim. Futures are not looking bright, and small businesses are struggling in the wake of the worst financial meltdown since the Depression. FDR understood that as a result of the Depression, the American people needed food and work, but he also recognized that they could use some distraction.
…
The massage parlor mural is not offensive, and neighbors aren’t complaining. Perhaps it should be up to the public to decide what is an eyesore or a “blight on the landscape.” At a time when funding for art programs in schools is drying up and the economy is barely hanging on, cities should be nurturing their artists and encouraging public artistic expression.

Hollywood wants massage parlor mural removed
Nobody argues the four graceful geishas on the mural outside All Asian Massage are ugly.
Members of a city review board went so far as to call the mural a work of art.
But under city rules, the $10,000 painted wall that owner Rui Nancy Zheng commissioned for her massage parlor at Sheridan Street and State Road 7 is a blight on the landscape.
Zheng calls it art; the city says it doesn’t belong near a residential neighborhood.
“All I was trying to do was have a beautiful building,” Zheng said outside her shop Tuesday. “There are weeds in the neighborhood, and I planted a flower. I don’t know what I did wrong. I am sorry.”
…
“As beautiful as it is, to me it was just additional signage,” said member John Passalacqua. “It was designed to further the Asian theme of an Asian massage parlor, not as stand-alone art.”

The state representative and his wife, political operative Barbara Effman, president of the West Broward Democratic Club, were laughing and holding hands at the monthly meeting of the Broward Democratic Party on Tuesday night. A day later, after news of the allegations of scandal appeared in the Sun-Sentinel, Barbara Effman said she and her husband were relaxing at home watching television. … Effman signed a confidential, out-of-court agreement on April 7 to settle a complaint from a 36-year-old woman he represented in a divorce case. The woman, whom the Sun-Sentinel is not naming, lost custody of her then-3-year-old twins to the state in 1997. She contended that Effman, 49, had sex with her during consultations on the case.
The settlement requires Effman to pay $ 150,000 and his firm’s malpractice insurance carrier, Continental Casualty Co., to pay $ 320,000.
… In addition to Clinton, other politicians have easily survived recent sex scandals.
Many mentioned Mayor Harry Venis of Davie, who was caught up in a police investigation of a Dania Beach X-rated massage parlor he frequented in 1997.

In addition to your curatorial duties, you also handle graphics and logos for some of the MIA’s most visible ops. Where might we have seen some of your handiwork? Lately, it’s mostly been logos. Like the new Poplife logo, DJ Ross One, Gorillas, Pase Rock, Jack Splash and some others you might have seen around.
Any other art-wise offerings we need to know about? DADARHEA! The next opening at OHWOW on Aug. 13. It’s hard to describe but imagine an artist summer camp where all you did was come up with absurd video ideas and you happened to have a full video production studio to film it all in for a month. You end up with paint exploding turkey dinners, East River shark attacks, a culinary massage parlor and s— talking amongst other things. That’s pretty vague but you really have to see it to get it.

Masseur Arrested For Giving Unhappy Endings
Massage Envy employee arrested for sexual battery
Updated 7:10 PM EDT, Fri, Jul 16, 2010
A Fort Lauderdale masseuse was arrested Friday for having wandering hands on customers at a popular massage parlor.
Kamonte McNeill, 32, faces two charges of sexual battery after two women claim the man was a little too frisky with their massages.
McNeill worked at Massage Envy in Fort Lauderdale, where the assaults took place.
The women claim McNeill brushed across their private areas during their body treatments, but Fort Lauderdale Police did not go into detail about what else McNeill may have done to the women.
Detectives say McNeill may have assaulted many more women clients.
“The clinics conduct criminal background checks on all potential massage therapists. The clinic is fully cooperating with the investigation being conducted by the police department,” Massage Envy released in a statement. “The therapist has been suspended pending the outcome of this investigation.”
