By mid-November, the students reached their financial goal and, in the process, established Miami as the first university whose undergraduates have funded a Room to Read school.
Although they’ve reached their goal, the group has not stopped raising money.
“Every additional $250 provides a scholarship to send one very deserving girl to school for a year,” said Kathryn Mulligan, assistant director for Miami’s Entrepreneurship Center.
Fudge explained, while poor families may find the money to send a son to school, it is a luxury for a girl to be educated.
“Without an education, girls in many developing countries are easily marginalized, marrying at a very early age and ending up doing heavy farm labor or turning to prostitution,” he said. “We are hopeful that the scholarships we provide will enable girls to attend the school we build.”

Inquiry rooted in agent’s role as lead investigator in case that closed Hallandale strip club
…
Barnes was promoted last year to a lieutenant position in the Miami office of Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco, the state agency responsible for licensing and monitoring the sale of alcohol. He previously had been an ABT agent working in Broward County, most notably as the lead investigator in the Cheetah Hallandale Beach strip club case.
…
The roots of the bribery inquiry into Barnes trace back to the Cheetah case, according to court records. After the strip club’s closure, a private investigation firm was hired by Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein to do surveillance of Barnes, the search warrant states. Rothstein’s law firm represented the Cheetah.
…
Rothstein paid to have Barnes watched after two of his law firm’s employees — both former ABT officials — became the targets of an evidence-tampering investigation involving the strip club. Rothstein’s employees — Pat Roberts and Michael Fisten — had overseen the Cheetah investigation before going to work for the Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler law firm.

And with everyone from The Situation to President Obama penning tomes, it can be hard to choose which is actually worth a read. Here are some favorites, including this one (right) by that handsome ex-Menudo-er.
