SUNRISE – Two women are facing prostitution charges after undercover investigators accused them of offering more than backrubs at a pair of Sunrise massage parlors.
Sandra Garcia, 36, who worked out of the “Garden of Paradise” at 3854 North University Drive, and Wendy Duarte, 26, who worked out of “Natural Healers” at 2500 North University Drive, were each accused of the unlicensed practice of health care for offering massages without a license.
Undercover Sunrise police detectives arrested them after receiving massages on July 16. The women are criminally charged with making “an overt offer to perform a sex act with the detectives,” according to the Florida Department of Health’s Unlicensed Activity Unit, which teamed with the police in the investigation.

Much harsher punishment awaited the nightclub and its affiliated lounge called the Living Room. Last week the Clark County Business License Department took away their liquor licenses and ordered them to be closed. The Miami-based owner has the right to appeal, but the nightclub and lounge must remain closed while the appeal is heard.
In its complaint against Planet Hollywood, the Gaming Control Board listed assaults by Prive employees and patrons, incidents involving drunkenness, lewd activity and an increase in Metro Police and medical emergency calls to the nightclub as among the behaviors that violated state gaming standards.
Four months before fining Planet Hollywood, the Gaming Control Board had written a memo to hotels that lease space to nightclubs. The memo reviewed some of the issues with area nightclubs — “excessive inebriation, drug distribution and abuse, violence, overt sexual acts in public places, … presence of minors, … date rape, …. prostitution.”

After researching the country, Elfmont wanted to do more than a promotional video. She recruited five college friends, packed up her film equipment in 19 metal cases and filmed in San Pedro Sula for nearly three weeks.
For 17 days, the filmmakers interviewed former M-13 (Mara Salvatrucha) and M-18 gang members, drug addicts, lawyers, policemen, politicians and prison officials.
SCENES OF DESPARATION
They filmed children begging in street corners, inhaling glue, and sleeping on sheets of cardboard. Their stories have a common theme: Extreme poverty, low education rates and broken homes. More than 50 percent of the Honduran population lives below the poverty line.
The young filmmaker took her camera into San Pedro Sula’s prison, where prostitution and rape are common. Foreigners are the most common target of kidnappings. Although there are women in the prison, it is not divided by gender, Elfmont said.

On Friday, Dodgers star Manny Ramirez was hit by a pitch thrown by Josh Johnson, and he sat out Sunday’s game because of a sore wrist caused by a plunking Tuesday when the Dodgers played the Cincinnati Reds.
Some Marlins also wondered whether Weaver was upset at the lopsided score.
“We play the game the right way,” Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “I understand we’ve got an eight-run lead, and the whole thing. But we’re not stealing bases or anything. We’re playing the game the right way, and for him to do that in that situation, it puts everybody in a situation where it’s not good baseball the rest of the game.”
Said Helms: “I think Weaver, it was not the right thing for him to do there. It was obvious he did it. We weren’t showing anybody up. We weren’t pimping..”
